Ball Liberals Failing at Supporting Local Industry: Petten

St. John’s, NL (July 27, 2018) – MHA Barry Petten, Opposition Transportation and Works Critic, is calling on the Ball Liberals to better support local industries in the province.

Petten refers to the Government’s recent cancellation of a primary work contract for Burry’s Shipyard in Clarenville, which has led the Shipyard to file for bankruptcy protection.

“The decision by the Ball Liberals to cancel the contract with Burry’s Shipyard in Clarenville threatens the livelihood of local residents, including over a hundred families in the region who will be impacted by the mass layoffs,” said Petten

“The Ball Liberals are failing to provide needed infrastructure supports for local industries, and to provide an environment where local businesses – including Burry’s Shipyard – can be competitive.”

The provincial government cancelled their work contract with the Shipyard, for M.V. Gallipoli, after their slipway was damaged in February. However, the slipway was fixed and operational before the ship was moved.

“It is becoming clear that the Ball Liberals do not believe local industries are a priority, and instead are abandoning rural regions of this province,” added Petten

“Our Progressive Conservative Official Opposition will continue to advocate for stronger supports to ensure economic development in all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
