Premier Ball Fails to Deliver on Trudeau’s Written Commitment to a 70% Share of a $400M NL Fisheries Investment Fund

Kevin Parsons, Fisheries Critic for the Official Opposition, said, “The Ball Liberals have failed to deliver on Prime Minister Trudeau’s written commitment to provide Newfoundland and Labrador with a 70 per cent share of a $400 million Fisheries Investment Fund, which would amount to a federal investment of $280 million specifically for Newfoundland and Labrador.”

“A Fisheries Investment Fund for Newfoundland and Labrador was negotiated with Ottawa with respect to the removal of minimum processing requirements in our fish processing sector. The funding announced today falls significantly short of the $280 million that was negotiated. Premier Ball is telling us to settle for $100 million, a fraction of what was promised and a fraction of what our fishing industry needs,” he said.

Mr. Trudeau made the commitment in writing to former Premier Paul Davis in December of 2014. The text of the letter is included in the attached backgrounder.

In his 2014 letter, Mr. Trudeau wrote: “your government's support of the CETA was earned, in part, by a promise from the Government of Canada to help the industry adjust to the new reality. That promise should be honoured.”

Parsons said, “Premier Ball is telling us we have to settle for a $100 million share of a $325 million fund for all of Atlantic Canada when clearly this is a breach of an agreement. He has refused to fight for, and failed to deliver, the $280 million in federal funding for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Fisheries Investment Fund. That funding is needed now to deal with what is happening in the fishing industry today and to deliver on the five pillars of the program – marketing opportunities; fishery science; research and development; infrastructure; and workplace adjustments. Why has Premier Ball been unwilling and unable to deliver on the commitment his federal counterpart and friend made to Newfoundland and Labrador in writing? It is simply not good enough.”
