Statement by Paul Davis on Facebook, May 12, 2018 at 5:31 a.m.

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
Alexander Graham Bell

It was two weeks ago today on April 28th when members of the PC Party of NL gathered at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s for the 2018 Leadership Convention.

To kick off the day we joined over 200 party faithful at a brunch held to reflect on my time as leader. I was truly humbled and honoured to attend the event along with my best friend, wife and supporter Cheryl Davis, some family members, friends, constituents and party members. I wish to again thank all those responsible for organizing this event, Kevin Parsons for the very kind comments and everyone who attended. (The attached video was played at the brunch event)

The Leadership Convention was the result of many months of work by a large group of dedicated volunteers. Over the past year our party created a new process that allowed for any citizen of N.L. to participate and to play a role in choosing our next leader, a first for the PC Party of NL. I extend sincere congratulations to all who played a role from the early beginnings to the process being completed.

We were fortunate to have two high quality candidates enter the race. Both Tony Wakeham and Ches Crosbie are highly respected in their own right and either would have been a great choice for leader. As you are aware, Mr. Crosbie was elected as the new leader of our party. I congratulate Ches on his election and encourage all party members to join together with him as we continue to focus on our opposition responsibilities and on being successful in the 2019 general election.

Ches has quickly settled in as a full contributor and asset to our caucus team, bringing a new dynamic and experience to our efforts. As we move forward with our new leader there is no better time for me to fully close the chapter on my leadership. After careful consideration I have decided to step aside as Opposition Leader in the House of Assembly and have asked Ches and caucus to choose a new Leader in the House. I will continue to serve as an MHA and will continue to contribute to the best of my ability as a member of the Ches Crosbie PC team inside and outside of the House of Assembly.

During my time as a Minister, Premier and Leader of the Opposition I have always said that I was the MHA for Topsail-Paradise first, and being an MHA has presented me with the privilege to serve in those other offices. The next chapter of my political career will be focused on the people of my district, the people who have supported me for several years, the people who I ran to serve in the first place.

I extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported me and look forward to the future together.
