Liberals Vote to Reject PC Motion to Relieve NL of Carbon Tax In Light of Hydro Initiatives

Barry Petten, Opposition Critic for the Environment, said, “The Ball Liberals have voted to reject a PC motion to relieve Newfoundland and Labrador of any obligation to pay carbon tax considering the significant investments in hydro power generation at Muskrat Falls, the Upper Churchill and Bay d'Espoir.”

“To make matters worse, they have voted in favour of giving Ottawa the authority to impose a carbon pricing system of its own design on the people of our province,” said Petten.

“The last thing our province needs is another tax, especially one imposed on us by Ottawa, but that’s exactly what the provincial Liberals have voted for. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are already investing billions to reduce greenhouse gas through hydro projects – including the Upper Churchill. We are doing more than our fair share and should not have to pay twice – and that’s why the Liberals’ decision today to support additional federal carbon taxation on our people is so shocking.”

“People around Holyrood know what greenhouse gas pollution looks like and were pleased to see us invest in shutting down the generating station and shifting our province to virtually 100% green energy reliance. We should be fully credited for our investments in green energy, and not have to pay twice as the Liberals want people to do,” said Petten.

The original PC motion read: “BE IT RESOLVED that this Honourable House calls on the Government of Canada to fully and fairly credit to our Province all green initiatives, such as the Muskrat Falls, Upper Churchill and Bay d’Espoir hydro developments, in relieving Newfoundland and Labrador of any obligation to pay carbon tax.”

The Liberals voted against that wording, replacing it with the following: “BE IT RESOLVED that this Honourable House calls on the Government of Canada to fully and fairly credit to our Province all green initiatives as it develops the federal carbon pricing system.”
