St. John’s, NL (October 2, 2018) – Today MHA Keith Hutchings, Opposition Natural Resources Critic, is asking for Nalcor to provide answers on what protections they have in place to protect workers of Astaldi on the Muskrat Falls job site.

In a letter to the Minister of Natural Resources, Hutchings is asking for clarity after a recent CBC News report indicated that Astaldi has collected $7.8 million in deductions from employees’ paycheques but has not made the related remittances to appropriate pension, health and additional benefit plans.

“This is concerning as those who work on the Muskrat Falls job site, who are employed by Astaldi, rely on these benefits and are planning to do so into the future,” wrote Hutchings

In his letter, Hutchings refers to the comments to media by Nalcor that the workers have protection under its contract with Astaldi, and will provide the required protection if necessary. However, Hutchings is urging the Minister to provide needed clarity to the workers immediately on what protection is in place.

“At this time I am asking you, as Minister of Natural Resources, to clarify this situation and Nalcor’s statement,” urged Hutchings

“Can you please identify what specific provisions are in the contract with Astaldi which provides protection to both Nalcor and the workers of Astaldi?”

Hutchings has released the attached letter to the public, in full, as he awaits response from the Minister.
